Renovation Project On The Brooklyn Bridge Arches To Improve Its Structural Integrity

The main focus of Brooklyn New York Illustrated Map is to show a scene of the beautiful landmarks, buildings and main landscape details in prospect. Unlike traditional maps that are drawn to scale, map illustrations combine scale and art to provide a person with a customary feeling of identification. However, the landmarks that were present in the illustrated map decades ago may no longer exist today or if they still exist, they have been changed.

In Brooklyn, New York, the underbelly of the Brooklyn Bridge is under renovation. The Italian Renaissance-style arches which are considered as the bridge’s most important architectural features will be overhauled. Originally, these arches were open voids but in 1883, they were filled with brick which has then deteriorated. The proposed restoration of the archways was unanimously approved by New York City’s Landmarks Preservation Commission.

The renovation project on the Brooklyn Bridge will include re-pointing of the stone on the main towers and installation of metal bars to reinforce the Gothic arches of the tower. Masonry on the arches located on the bridge approach will also be re-pointed. Reinforced concrete walls that will withstand the new brick walls in the archways will have to be constructed. The Department of Transportation expects that the renovation will be completed by December 2022.

However, renovation projects in the past have caused stress among residents near the bridge in Brooklyn Heights, Concord Village and Lower Manhattan. Their sleep is interrupted because work is usually done at night time. To solve this issue, Nick Pettinati, deputy director of urban design, Department of Transportation, said that they are still working on details whether the upcoming renovations on the bridge will involve nighttime construction.

Pettinati also said that the bridge arches can’t be left open like it was originally designed because of security concerns. Besides that, walls are needed to add structural stability to the bridge.

The world famous bridge that connects Brooklyn and Manhattan is an important element in Brooklyn New York Illustrated Map because it will help people identify the way to their intended destination. Prominent landmarks are always used in map illustrations because the technique gives a person an instant feeling of identification.
