No More Free Soda Refills In France

The French, on the average, are not as overweight as Americans and Europeans but the government is relentless in its drive against obesity. In 2004, France has banned vending machines in schools. In 2011, France required that French fries could only be served once a week in school cafeterias. Last Friday, restaurants were prohibited from offering free refills of soda and other sugary drinks.

Fast food restaurants particularly the foreign chains will feel the pressure of the new law that takes effect immediately to reduce the risks of obesity and diabetes especially among the young. The law is in line with the recommendation from the World Health Organization (WHO) that has urged countries to impose a soda tax on sugary drinks to reduce obesity.

France has always been at the forefront when tackling issues regarding obesity. Japan is also serious about reducing obesity by requiring companies and local government to measure the waistlines of their employees who are between the ages of 40 and 74. The national law also encourages people to exercise regularly.

In Mexico, sugary drinks were imposed with a 10% surcharge in 2014 to reduce diabetes rates. After a year, the sales of sugary beverages fell by at least 12% while sales of bottled water increased 4%. Similar efforts are underway in Philadelphia, the first major city in the United States to introduce a tax on soda and sugary drinks; however, the tax provoked public outrage.

In 2012, New York planned to ban the sale of large sugary drinks in restaurants and other venues but the courts turned down the proposal in 2013.  In France, the new law has divided the people although they actually consume fewer soft drinks per capita than residents from other countries.

The overall rate of obesity in France is relatively low but it is only right for the government to discourage the consumption of too much sugary drinks. If you want to lose weight fast and easy, your best option is HCG weight loss drops which when combined with a healthy low calorie diet will allow you to lose an average of at least 1 pound a day.
