Even The Rich And Powerful Wear Hoodies And Jeans And They Get Away With It

A hoodie is a sweatshirt with a hood and a drawstring that adjusts the hood opening. Many people use hoodies with a university logo for casual wear. Some hoodies designs have been inspired by the phenomenal show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

Even rich and powerful men wear rumpled jeans, boring t-shirts and sneakers when they make public appearances. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and T-Mobile Chief John Legere are not draped in expensive suits and accessories but dress in casual outfits. They certainly get away with non-conforming behavior and they do not fear the loss of their status because they have more than enough to spare.

For example, in one experiment Quartz conducted, a Harvard Business Law professor taught in class wearing a pair of red sneakers which is not the usual thing to do in a distinguished scenario. Investigators also examined shop assistants working at luxury boutiques in Milan and how they perceive customers that were poorly dressed.

According to the investigation of Quartz, there are three conditions where individuals will likely be perceived as rich even if they are wearing hoodies and sweatpants.

• The participant must be well acquainted with social norms in a specific environment. This will ensure that shop assistants at expensive boutiques will perceive a customer to be rich in spite of the gym clothes against an elderly well dressed woman.

• Non-conformity can be perceived as intentional with the individual deliberately choosing his attire because he is confident about his bank account.

• Being unique goes hand in hand with high status. This is best exemplified by the professor wearing red sneakers as someone from a higher class in spite of the oddity.

It is ironic but it seems that consumers who favor expensive brands in order to look rich do not actually look rich. Pedestrians would likely assume a well dressed elderly woman is wealthy compared to a poorly dressed individual because they are not capable of discerning status. So next time you meet an individual wearing hoodies and crumpled pants, it does not mean he does not have the money to buy high end clothing.
