Dubai Develops Comprehensive, Updated And Unified Base Map

Most large-scale illustrated maps are created using several satellite imagery and mapping resources. The 2D maps service starts with a high-quality site plan to fully illustrate a 2D map. The site plan includes key pieces of information and photographs or renderings of buildings that will be included in the map.

Meanwhile, an agreement was signed between RTA and Dubai Municipality for the development of a comprehensive, unified and updated base map of Dubai. The detailed replica of Dubai will include details of its landmark in 2D and 3D. The map will help Dubai in planning and developing the emirate.

The comprehensive geospatial data and maps of “Dubai Here” will include all its assets, landmarks and facilities from the master plans to the interior details of buildings. Also covered are landmarks like roads, trees, bridges, green spaces, utility lines and residential units. The geospatial map of the emirate can be accessed through the electronic system that was launched by Dubai’s Municipality’s Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Centre.

“Dubai Here” can be easily accessed on the web browser or smart device. Maps will be displayed from a comprehensive geospatial database where all parties are allowed to contribute to or update. There is access to details of housing units, service units and network including information on economic activities, the environment, population and heath.

According to Dawoud Al Hajri, director general of Dubai Municipality, geospatial data and maps are important tools that can be used for decision-making. “GeoDubai” was also launched by the GIS Centre to provide access to the comprehensive and unified base map.

In order to have a map that can be used as an effective tool for planning, designing and managing development projects, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) also signed an agreement with Dubai Municipality for the development of a unified, updated and comprehensive base map of Dubai.

Before 2D maps service can create an illustrated 2D map of a certain place, the client must provide a long-term plan or estimate of their graphic needs including preferred layers, colors and groups. The design and format of the end product will depend on the materials that have been provided by client.

How Cartographic Illustrators Help Place Sydney On The Map

Long before the emergence of digital technology, it took the genius and efforts of exploration, observation, mathematics, geometry and drawing to be able to create charts and maps of the world. Early cartography illustrator required plenty of ingenuity and perhaps a little interpretation to create maps that are now considered as works of art.

Centuries ago, it was not easy to get a bird’s eye view of Sydney because there were no drones or satellites. A good example is the elevated view of the Garden Palace in Sydney’s International Exhibition that was created in 1880. Together with other intriguing maps of Sydney, the best example of bird’s eye view maps are displayed in an exhibition called Cartographica at Customs House.

The map of Port Jackson in 1935 showed that the port was buzzing with activity. The map included the 3-year old Harbour Bridge, Taronga Zoo and a plane flying over Dobroyd Point as sign of the times. Illustrator Adrian Feint probably wanted to refer to the first commercial air service on Australian National Airways that carried mail and passengers to Brisbane in 1932.

According to Margaret Betteridge, curator of the Civic Collection at the City of Sydney, the exhibition also includes an interesting bird’s eye view of the harbor in 1913 showing Garden Island as a separate island in the harbor before it was joined to the mainland. This did not happen until World War II making it an interesting feature in updating maps.

A map created during 1990 shows the importance of GPO as a marker for maritime transport to Sydney. A system of raising flags on top of the GPO would announce the arrival of steamers carrying mail. Those who were expecting mail would look out for the relevant flag. The clock tower was an indicator of weather because a flag will be raised if there is a thunderstorm coming from the South Coast.

Technology has greatly helped the cartographic illustrator in illustrating maps. In the past, map illustrators have to climb mountains and trees to view prospects. It is surprising how map illustrators centuries ago were able to cover great areas to get their artistic perspectives.

People’s Fascination Over Ancient Map Art

In today’s digital world, map art is considered as an outdated relic of the distant past. People have forgotten how revolutionary map illustrations were during the age when there were no Google maps that chart the contours of the earth. Antique illustrated maps teach people how the world was in the past and how it changed through the centuries.

One example is the Schedel world map that was drawn in 1493. The map’s side panel shows fantastical creatures that were believed to have inhabited the farthest corners of earth. There were also countless maps made from the 17th to the 18th century that illustrate California as an island that is floating out to the seas.

Map illustrations that were created centuries ago were the symbols of people’s thirst for knowledge and their desire to explore. The shifting lines chart the direction of human history. The map illustrations are inspired by geography, politics, religion and culture. According to Massimo De Martini, director of London’s Althea Gallery, map illustrations are great topics to initiate conversations.

People buy illustrated maps because they are artifacts and artistic works that can be used to decorate walls. The 300-year old map of Arabia is still identifiable and recognizable piece of art. People are willing to spend huge sums of money for a map illustration because of their fascination with the age of exploration. This was the time when explorers sail unchartered seas to discover new lands and societies.

Althea Gallery was able to sell a world map from the 1842 edition of Geographica for more than £200,000 a few years ago. One of the oldest and most expensive maps that are currently being offered by the Althea Gallery is from the Ulm Edition of Ptolemy’s Geographica and valued at £35,000. The 1486 map depicts the recognizable silhouette of “Arabia Felix.”

Many people are fascinated by map art because it shows that evolution and progress of a specific city or country including how it developed over the years. Most of the illustrated maps depict places and events during a certain period in history. The maps are nostalgic because they show a scene that happened long time ago.
