Rare Tropical Bed Bugs Found In Hawaii And Florida

Following its 60-year nonappearance in the U.S., a bed bug famous for its capability to spread so fast just recently invaded Hawaii and Florida, as stated by experts that study about the parasitic pest.

Tropical bed bug vs common bed bug

The tropical bed bug, with scientific name Cimex hemipterus, is increasing concerns since the usual eradication methods may not keep its numbers at bay.

Brittany Campbell, an entomologist from the University of Florida, spoke to Seeker, and said that the tropical bed bug and the common bed bug, Cimex lectularius, look similar to a person’s naked eye. Likewise, signs like shed skin, blood spots and bites are also the same for both. She also added that they cause tiny bite marks to some serious allergic reactions, which may require fast medical action.

However, under microscopes, these two species will look different, according to Campbell. She continued that the tropical bed bug’s pronotum is shaped differently. This is U-shaped in common bed bugs.

The bed bug’s existence in tropical areas

The bed bug’s existence has still not been proven in Hawaii, she said. However, the presence is Florida is more known. A family in Merritt Island reported the infestation and sent a sample to Campbell. She, together with her team, found out that the it came from a long-lost tropical species.

It was found during the 1930s to 1940s, but it wasn’t reported again until the incident from Merritt Island.

The parasite is sometimes found in Africa, Asia, South America, parts of Australia and other tropical environments. It favors humid and warm environments and could possibly spread to southern states like California.

News spreading about the tropical bed bug

With the news spreading about the parasite invasion, John Cooksey from McCall Service thinks that pest control operators are going to pay greater attention to these species.

Cooksey mentioned that these species may be resistant to some insecticides. Exterminators depend mostly on controlled heating in order to kill bed bugs. When done right, this method is a way on how to kill bed bugs at home, eliminating pesticide use which bugs become resistant to.

Tropical bugs, on the other hand, are used to the heat. Cooksey said that several researchers think these can evolve to having great heat resistance.

Real Weathered Wood Recycled From An Old Potato Storage Facility

Tulelake Cold Storage was built in 1940 with cooling efficiency through cement blocks and sawdust insulation on the outside walls. It was used as the storage for sacked potatoes before they are needed in the market. Now, the rooms that were used for potato storage have been abandoned. Many people assumed that there is nothing left to salvage; they were wrong.

The 6 buildings and shops with a total floor area of 120,000 square feet are filled with well-preserved Douglas Fir wood flooring. The wood was inside a climate controlled structure for many years so that it was very dry, very straight and very clean. The lumber that was used to build the floors was harvested from old growth trees with really tight grain. You don’t see this type of lumber anymore.

Christopher Green, Reba and Dennis VanAcker through their business DoubleHead Enterprises purchased the Tulelake Cold Storage in June 2013 after it has been out of business for the last 11 years. Since the building was already abandoned, the family reclaimed the old lumber floor, floorboard by floorboard and offered it to buyers through the internet.

When some Japanese learned that DoubleHead was selling well-preserved timber from the 1930’s to the 1960’s, they flew immediately to look at the wood and were visibly overwhelmed. They bought four container-loads of flooring, mainly the 2 by 12 foot slats. The Japanese will use the timber for flooring, wall coverings, doors and furniture.

The floors of the cold storage were well built with sawdust and coolant system to provide proper ventilation for the potatoes. Air coolant was pumped into the entire building that is why the wood floors were well preserved. Greens and the VanAcker’s including some hired help spent their spare hours to carefully remove the boards and pack them for buyers.

Manual timber removal can be labour intensive and time consuming. Timber Floor Removal in Perth can complete the job quickly and efficiently through proper equipment, specialized tools and accessories and of course highly trained and experienced staff. The removal of timber flooring will be undertaken within an agreed timeframe while minimizing any inconveniences and disruptions.

Bringing New Life To Tires

Andrew Stevens happily spent the Saturday morning hurling tires to a semi-trailer’s back.

Andrew who is just fourteen years old said that he likes doing it, and that he feels good to be able to help the community.

He went along with his father, Kelley Stevens, in order to assist in collecting used tires from their community for recycling at the Bridgestone Americas Off Road Tire located at 1600 Fort Jesse Road in Normal.

Kelly Stevens who is also a tire builder at Bridgestone said that the event allows tires to be put back to recycling than in getting dumped at landfills.

Collecting tires for recycling

Currently in its 4th year, the Bridgestone event was able to collect numerous tire types, go-kart tires to tractor tires, to be forwarded to the Liberty Tire Recycling.

The recycling company will be shredding the used rubber tires with an equipment like a rubber granulator or a similar tool. Then, they will make rail road ties, welcome mats, athletic tracks, mulch for flowerbeds and playgrounds and a highway asphalt additive.

The rubber mulch from recycling lessens the method of harvesting trees used for wood ground cover. This is less expensive than wood mulch, and it also promotes safe playgrounds.

Bridgestone’s plant manager, Monty Greutman mentioned that the collection number increases each year. Last year, about 1,900 used tires were loaded into 3 semi-trailers. He expected that 2,000 or more Twin City tires are going to be forwarded to the Liberty Tire Recycling after the event this year.

Helping the environment

For Greutman, this event helps clean the environment and also keeps Bridgestone part of the community.

David Colter from Hopedale dropped agriculture tires. The volunteers got the tires from the truck using a forklift and put them to the semi-trailer. Colter said that he has been doing it for 3 years already.

Mike Thomas also dropped some tires off. He said that this is a great thing for their community. He added that it is better to get old tires out from yards instead of leaving them collect water and therefore attracting mosquitoes especially that Zika is prevalent lately. He also expressed that this a civic duty.

Plan the Holiday Party

Kristopher Jones from LSEO.com mentions that there is some disappointment in teams when the seasons change from summer to fall then winter. However, with the festive season near, this is a great moment to start with the holiday party planning.

Choose Fall Activities for Fun
